Tiger Woods Tees it up this Week at the Frys.com Open

The former world's No. 1 player Tiger Woods dropped out of the top-50 in the Official Word Golf Rankings this week for the first time since 1996 when he was 61st.

He is now 51st in the world and will be teeing it up this week at the Frys.com Open for the first time since missing the cut at the PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club in August.

Woods lack of playing this season has been mostly due to lingering injuries to his left knee and left achilles, forcing him to participate in only eight events so far in 2011.

However, though he has not played a lot this season, that did not keep U.S. Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples from selecting Woods as one of his two Captain's picks to the 2011 squad to play in Australia, November 17 - 20.

"I always enjoy competing in my home state, and this tournament fits my schedule perfectly," said Woods.  "One of my goals this year was to participate in a tournament I hadn't played before. And now I will."

"It's been a long time between the PGA and the Frys, and I'll be anxious to compete."

Everyone will be anxious to see how Woods will perform this week at the CordeValle Golf Club in California.

In the eight events he has played in 2011, Woods has just two top-10's, a missed cut and a withdrawal.

Woods in 2011:
  • PGA Championship - Missed cut
  • WGC Invitational - T37th
  • Players Championship - Withdrew
  • The Maters - 4th
  • Arnold Palmer Invitational - T24th
  • WGC Cadillac - T10th
  • WGC Match Play - T33rd
  • Farmer Insurance Open - T44th
As you can see, he has not exactly been lighting it up this season as we are use to seeing from Woods.

He missed the first majors of his career due to his nagging injuries he re-aggravated at the Masters in April and was not at the US Open or the Open Championship.

Perhaps that time has passed for Woods and he may be passing the torch to the younger stars of golf as he is now in his mid-thirties and nursing injuries that have plagued him for several years now.

The Frys.com Open is set to begin this Thursday at the CordeValle Golf Club and all eyes I am sure will be affixed on Tiger Woods and what he will perform in his first tournament back since the PGA Championship.

  1. It certainly will be interesting to see how Tiger will play this week at the Frys. He did not look that good at all at the PGA.

If he can't contend say into the top-25 here, it may be a long time before he is ever going to show any signs of returning to form.

Of course, he may never return to what he was...Who does at an older age these days. But it would be nice to see him at least be competitive again on Tour.

  2. Chad - Yeah, I think everyone is really anxcious to see how Woods is going to come out after not playing in an event since the PGA.

And as you said, he didn't look all that great there either.

I was actually there and followed him a few holes during round one and he did not look good at all on any of his game.

Tee balls were off, couldn't make any putts. Chipping looked suspect. He and Foley had better have put some long hours in for it to get better for him.

Thanks for checking out the new site Chad.
