The American was coming off a top-10 finish at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open last weekend and surged into the lead with a 25-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole. He capped the round with another birdie on the 18th after sticking his approach within inches of the hole.
Keegan Bradley had seven birdies to finish two strokes back in second, and Sergio Garcia was another shot behind at 6 under.
Moore began his round with a bogey on his opening hole, though he would more than make that stroke up on his front nine.
The 31-year old went on to birdie five more holes on the front side, including a three in a row stretch from Nos. 4 through 5. Adding two more birdies on Nos. 8 and 9, to card birdies on five of his last six holes on the front nine, making the turn in 32.
It was much of the same for Moore on his inward nine.
A birdie on the par-3, 11th would get things going again. Followed by another triple birdie pack on Nos. 14 through 16 before a closing birdie on No. 18 to finish off his 9-under, 63 and the first round lead at the CIMB Classic.
