Brian Harman breaks course record at Honda Classic

Golfs immortal number is of course, 59. In round two of the 2012 Honda Classic at PGA National's Champion course. Brian Harman was flirting with that very feat.

Beginning his day after posting an opening round score of a three-over, 73. Harman knew he had to go post a solid number to be around for the weekend.

He did, just a tad better than that for himself.

Getting out of the gates quickly, the Savannah, Georgia native shot to four-under par through his first three holes. Going birdie, birdie, eagle.

Two more birdies on the front nine on No.'s 5 and 8, Harman would make the turn going out in 29.

Not get ahead of ourselves, no one was talking too much about the possibilities of him posting a 59.

A birdie on No. 11 would start the rumours flying. Though he bogeyed the par-four, 12th. His only true slip of the day.

After a par on No. 13, Harman would quickly get the talks flying again around the course.

Three birdies in a row from holes 14 through 16 had the media and gallery paying close attention to what the Georgia Tech graduate was doing.

“I walked off 16 and I was like, man, if I birdie these last two holes, I’m going to shoot 59,” Harman said after his record setting round. “I had a good shot there on 17. And I hit a great drive on 18 and had a chance. I mean, I had a chance."

“This is probably one of the hardest golf courses we play all year, and just to have a chance to do something special like that is really humbling and it’s really cool.”

After parring the 17th, Harman needed an eagle on 18 to finish off with a shot at 59.

His approach shot after a good drive needed about two feet more to be absolutely perfect. Instead, finding the green side bunker.

Harman would have to settle for a par on No. 18, in the mean time setting the course record with a nine-under, 61.

“It’s just one of those things,” Continued Harman. “Funny how things work out, and I’m going to try to keep going.”

  1. Golfer? I hope you didn’t miss the Mayakoba Golf Classic this weekend. Everyone looked like they enjoyed sunny beautiful Mexico! Especially first time PGA Tour winner, John Huh. Final round wrap-up video right here: http://bit.ly/xy1vqH
