Phil Mickelson entered the final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am six strokes off of the lead of Charlie Wi. By the end of the afternoon, he would be hoisting the trophy in the winners circle for the fourth time at Pebble Beach.
Lefty, who was paired with Tiger Woods for the final round, played nearly perfect all day. Making putt after putt, as his playing partner Woods could not get anything going on Sunday.
Mickelson's putter was on fire for most of the day.
Saving par for him on several occasions from 30 and even 40 feet at times.
Mickelson began the 2012 season rather slow, missing the cut at Torrey Pines (his back yard) and not cracking the top-25 at the Humana Challenge.
By his own admission, his putting has been better than it may have ever been. He was just waiting for everything to click on the course at an event.
It did more than click on Sunday, it was one of the best performances Mickelson has shown in some time.
"It feels just amazing," said Mickelson after his victory. "I felt like my game was there, but coming out the first couple of weeks, I posted some horrendous scores and started to question it. To be able to play the way I did the last 18 holes really means a lot."
Mickelson would ultimately finish at 17-under par, a two stroke victory over Charlie Wi. Ending the event in style, with a birdie on 18.
For the third week in a row, the winner of the event has come from behind in dramatic fashion. During these past three weeks. The winner of each event has come from at least six strokes off of the lead for the victory.
Six shots back to begin the day, Mickelson roared to the front carding three birdies and an eagle through his first six holes. He would end up making the turn at five-under.
Three more birdies on the back nine would secure the World Golf Hall of Fame member the victory. His 40th victory of his PGA Tour career.
That victory puts Mickelson in some rare company. He became only the ninth player in the Tour's history to record 40 wins in a career.
It was also his first victory since winning the Shell Houston Open in 2011.
With his wife Amy in the gallery off of 18, and at Pebble Beach all week long. Mickelson turned in one of his best performances in recent memory.
Though not a major championship. I'm sure the victory is just as sweet for Mickelson to do it in his home state, against one of the games biggest names, playing along side him all day long to witness it first hand.
Perhaps his wife summed up his final round best, as the two embraced after he birdied the 18th hole. "Are you kidding me, with that round?"
One to truly remember from Mickelson.
