The World Golf Hall of Fame announced today in a press conference in Singapore, that it will enshrine American golfer Phil Mickelson into it's Hall of Fame class of 2012.
Mickelson, who is playing in the Singapore Open this week as a tune up for the Presidents Cup, received 72 percent of the votes.
The highest percentage a player has ever received since Greg Norman in 2001, when the 'Shark' received 80 percent.
PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem made an announcement on the Hall of Fame selection of Mickelson.
"On behalf of the PGA Tour, I congratulate Phil Mickelson on being bestowed with one of the highest honors in our sport -- induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame."
"It seems Phil has been destined for this honor for some time. From his days as one of world's premier amateur players to his seamless transition to professional star, Phil has always performed at the highest levels of the sport and this recognition is well deserved."
Mickelson's induction ceremony into the World Golf Hall of Fame will be held the Monday of The Players week, May 7, 2012 in St. Augustine, Florida at the World Golf Village.
After receiving the news of the this honor, Mickelson made a brief statement regarding how he felt upon hearing he would be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
"My thanks go to those who voted me into the World Golf Hall of Fame."
"It really is a tremendous honor to be mentioned alongside the greats of a game that's centuries old. The Players Championship week always has been special to me and the Induction Ceremony next May will make it even more so."
Mickelson's brilliant career includes his four major victories, where he won the Masters three times (2004, 2006 and 2010) as well as the PGA Championship in 2005.
Lefty also has, 47 world wide wins, 39 coming on the PGA Tour. Which ties him for 10th place all time on that list.
He also has seven European Tour wins and one Challenge Tour win since turning professional in 1992.
Hall of Fame Chief Operating Officer Jack Peter released a statement on inducting Mickelson into the Hall of Fame.
"We look forward to welcoming Phil Mickelson into the World Golf Hall of Fame family."
"He is one of golf's most beloved and successful players and we are excited to tell Phil's story at the 2012 Induction Ceremony and in the World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum."
