On a cold and windy day in Central Florida, Dustin Bray and Harold Varner III opened the Stonegate Classic with matching 2-under par rounds of 70 to share the lead after round one of play.
Bray, who has four wins to his name on the Charlotte based eGolf Tour series, is making his Florida series debut this week at the Stonegate Classic. From 2007-2009 he spent time on the Web.com Tour where he would post five top-10 finishes.
The former University of North Carolina Tarheel opened his round with a birdie on the par-4, second before posting bogeys on Nos. 7 and 8 making the turn at 37.
Birdies on the par-5, 14th and finishing his opening round out with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 have him tied for the lead with Varner at 2-under par.
Varner had a much more interesting round to say the least.
The former East Carolina Pirate carded two eagles, three birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey en route to his 2-under score in round one.
His roller coaster round got underway with an eagle on the opening par-5 first, before posting his lone bogey on his opening nine at the par-3, fourth.
Back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5 and 6 combined with his second eagle on the front nine on the par-5, eighth had Varner make the turn at 5-under, 31.
The inward nine however did not go as famously as his opening nine.
With a double bogey on the par-4, 11th followed with a bogey on the 12th saw his score slip back to 2-under.
A birdie on the par-5, 14th would give way to his final bogey of the round at the par-4, 16th. Finishing his round at 2-under and in a tie for the lead with Bray.
